Abstract

This study assessed the dangers associated with the use of contraceptives and birth control pills among adolescent girls in Shao, Moro Local Government Area, Kwara State. The objectives were to examine the physiological and psychological effects of contraceptive use, explore the association between contraceptive use and major depressive disorders, and evaluate the effectiveness of existing policy frameworks in promoting adolescent access to diverse contraceptive methods. A descriptive survey design was employed to collect data from adolescent respondents using structured questionnaires. Findings revealed that contraceptive use among adolescents is linked to side effects such as menstrual cycle changes, nausea, weight gain, and significant emotional impacts including stress, guilt, and mood disturbances. Moreover, the study identified a notable correlation between contraceptive use and the risk of major depressive disorder. Although adolescents expressed awareness and a preference for varied contraceptive options, the existing policies were found to inadequately support these preferences. The study concludes that a more comprehensive policy approach and targeted health education are essential to address both the physical and psychological needs of adolescent contraceptive users, ensuring safer and more informed reproductive health decisions.
