THE WEIGHT CHANGES AND HISTOMORPHOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF MAGGI STAR SEASONING (MONOSODIUM GLUTAMATE) ON THE LIVER OF WISTAR RATS
Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the weight changes and histomorphological effects of Maggi star seasoning (monosodium glutamate) administration on the liver of Wistar rats. This experimental study was carried out in the animal house of Achievers University Owo, Ondo state. Twenty adult male Wister rats with average body weight of 100-150g was purchased and housed under standard husbandry conditions of temperature and light (30˚C ± 5, and 12h light-dark cycle) and fed with the rat diet and water provided ad. Libitum. Animals were acclimatized for a period of two weeks at the end of which, the twenty animals were divided randomly into five groups as follows; Group I was given distilled water and continued to be fed the normal diet and served as control, Group II to Group V was administered 20mg/kg, 50mg/kg, 100mg/Kg and 200mg/kg of monosodium glutamate once daily respectively for a period of 28 days. Body weights, possible physical features were recorded. Data were analysed with Microsoft excel and Graph Pad prism version 8.0.1 (244). The results showed that, the administration of varying dosages of Maggi star seasoning (monosodium glutamate) to the Wistar rats, produced observable physical features such as increased appetite, sweating and weakness in the test groups compared to the control group. Also, effects of administration of Maggi star seasoning (monosodium glutamate) on the body weights of Wistar rats showed a statistically significant changes (at P
