Abstract

This study evaluates the behaviours of moisture content, water absorption, and solvent dissolution of rigid bio-based foams enhanced with varying concentrations (0g, 0.5g, 1.0g, and 1.5g) of activated carbon and cellulose fillers. Lignin extracted from baobab shell served as a key polyol source in the foam production. The results showed that cellulose-enhanced foams generally had high moisture retention and but demonstrated superior water retainment, with the 0.5g cellulose-filled foam exhibiting the lowest moisture content (0.2%). Solubility testing across solvents like THF, water, acetone, and ethanol revealed moderate resistance in both filler types, with activated carbon-based foams showing higher solubility in polar solvents. The outcomes suggest that while activated carbon improves thermal and moisture stability, cellulose offers better dimensional stability in wet environments. These findings demonstrate the potential of lignin-based bio foams for applications in insulation, packaging, and biodegradable materials, offering an eco-friendly alternative to conventional petroleum-based foams.
