Abstract

This project explores the design, construction, and functionality of a small-scale, sustainable aquaponics system using a Media Bed approach. The system was chosen for its effective nutrient cycling, ease of maintenance, and compact layout, making it suitable for limited spaces while supporting a variety of plants and fish. Key stages of construction included civil, plumbing, welding, and electrical works, all aimed at ensuring stability, efficient water flow, and operational safety. The design also incorporated durable, eco-friendly materials and an aesthetically pleasing layout that integrates natural light and ventilation. Results demonstrate the system’s capacity for stable and sustainable food production, providing a practical solution for urban agriculture. This project highlights the potential of aquaponics as a viable, eco-friendly alternative for sustainable food systems, with recommendations for future improvements, including automation and renewable energy integration.
