DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF A DIGITAL LED CLOCK USING A REAL-TIME CLOCK AND MICROCONTROLLER
Abstract
This project presents the design and construction of a digital LED clock using a Real Time Clock (RTC) module and a microcontroller. The aim is to develop a reliable and accurate digital clock capable of displaying real-time information in hours, minutes, and seconds on an LED display. The system incorporates an RTC module, which maintains precise timekeeping through its crystal oscillator and backup battery, even when power is disconnected. The microcontroller serves as the central processing unit, responsible for reading data from the RTC, processing it, and updating the LED display accordingly. The project also includes a regulated DC power supply unit that provides stable voltage for the entire circuit, ensuring smooth and consistent operation. The clock is programmed using embedded C language, and the circuit was designed and simulated using appropriate software before construction. During implementation, components such as resistors, capacitors, transistors, and connectors were carefully selected to ensure optimal performance and durability. This project demonstrates the integration of hardware and software design in an embedded system to achieve an efficient, accurate, and easy-to-read digital time display. The constructed clock is highly reliable, consumes low power, and can be easily modified to include additional features such as an alarm, calendar, or temperature display. It finds useful application in homes, offices, schools, and laboratories, where accurate and continuous time display is essential.
