Abstract

The Cucurbitaceae, also called the gourd family are group of plants in the order cucurbitales reported for it role in nutrition and medicine. Watermelon mosaic virus (WMV) is a potyvirus reported to infect cucurbits across the world. This virus is an important constraint to cucurbit production in temperate and Mediterranean climatic conditions. This research was carried out to determine the host range of Watermelon mosaic virus (WMV) using different cucurbit plants. The result revealed that all tested cucurbits were susceptible to the virus showing symptoms ranging from mosaic to severe leaf malformation/deformation. This result is an indication that WMV has a host range restricted to the cucurbit family.
