EFFECT OF METHANNOLIC LEAF EXTRACT OF ANONONA SENEGALENSIS ON LIVER AND KIDNEY FUNCTION BIOMARKERS IN ALLOXAN INDUCED DIABETIC ALBINO RATS
Abstract
This project tiled “Effect of Methannolic Leaf Extract of Anonona Senegalensis on Liver and Kidney Function Biomarkers in Alloxan Induced Diabetic Albino Rats”. The Objectives of the study is to determine Antioxidant activity of senegalensis leaf extract, to determine the effect of the extract on liver function biomarkers on the alloxan induced diabetic albino rats and to determine the effect of the extract on kidney function biomarkers on the alloxan induced diabetic albino rats. Antioxidant assays, using DPPH and hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) scavenging and Frap demonstrated concentration-dependent radical inhibition, with maximum activity of 74.74% and 78.52% respectively at 500 µg/ml. Although less potent than ascorbic acid, the extract showed appreciable reducing power, confirming its antioxidant potential. Phytochemical analysis revealed high levels of phenols (98.05%), flavonoids (10.47%), tannins, alkaloids, glycosides, and saponins, which are likely responsible for the observed bioactivities. In vivo studies indicated that the extract moderated, stabilized body weight, and improved kidney function by lowering urea and creatinine concentrations. Similarly, liver function parameters (ALT, AST, ALP, bilirubin, and T. proteins) were better regulated in treated groups compared to untreated diabetic rats, suggesting hepatoprotective effects. However, some groups exhibited variations in electrolyte balance and liver enzyme levels, indicating possible dose-dependent effects. The ethanolic leaf extract of A. senegalensis possesses strong antioxidant, hypoglycemic, nephroprotective, and hepatoprotective properties, largely attributed to its rich phytochemical constituents. These findings support its potential use in managing diabetes-related oxidative stress and organ dysfunction, though further studies are required to establish safe therapeutic dosages.
