Abstract

In this study, malaria anaemia and platelet count in relation to immune status of HIV patients referred to Amachara Medical Centre, Umuahia, Abia State between September and December 2020, was carried out. 50 blood samples were carefully examined for malaria and anaemia using using Giemsa stained thick blood microscopy, haemoglobin levels, packed cell volume and platelet count were carried out using Sysmex haematology analyzer respectively. Semi-structured questionnaires were also used to collect demographic data of the 50 HIV patients sampled. The males had the higher malaria prevalence of 13(65%) while the females had the lower prevalence of 16(53.33%). The malaria prevalence with respect to age group showed that those within 36-40 years had the higher prevalence of 6(75%) while the age group of 25-30 had the lower 4(0%). The mean HB, PCV and platelets count of the malaria infected patients were significantly lower than those infected within the CD4 cell count of < 200-500 recorded lower mean HB, PCV and platelet count. Malaria prevention strategies should be increased among the HIV patients as malaria has more adverse effects on them.
