CLIMATE CHANGE MITIGATION STRATEGIES ADOPTED BY PALM WINE TAPPERS IN EKET AGRICULTURAL ZONE, AKWA IBOM STATE NIGERIA
Abstract
Climate change poses significant threats to agriculture and rural livelihoods,
particularly in developing regions like Nigeria. Palm wine tapping, a traditional
economic activity in the Eket Agricultural Zone of Akwa Ibom State, is vulnerable to
climate variability, which affects tree productivity and the overall sustainability of the
practice. This study examines the climate change mitigation strategies adopted by palm
wine tappers in the region to sustain their livelihood and preserve the environment. A
mixed-methods approach was employed, combining qualitative and quantitative data
collected through structured interviews, focus group discussions, and field
observations. The study assessed the awareness level of palm wine tappers regarding
climate change, identified the adaptive techniques they employ, and evaluated the
effectiveness of these strategies. Findings reveal that palm wine tappers in Eket
Agricultural Zone are increasingly adopting sustainable practices such as selective
tapping, agroforestry integration, seasonal harvesting adjustments, and organic soil
conservation techniques to counteract the adverse effects of climate change.
Additionally, community-based initiatives and indigenous knowledge systems play a
crucial role in resilience-building among local tappers. The study recommends
enhanced government support, climate education programs, and access to modern
adaptation tools to strengthen the capacity of palm wine tappers in mitigating climate
change impacts. It concludes that empowering local farmers and tappers with climate
smart agricultural techniques will contribute significantly to environmental
conservation and economic sustainability in the region.
