Abstract

Air quality is a global issue, particularly in developing countries and the declining air quality in a deepening environmental unease. This study is aimed to analyze the bacteriological air quality of public primary schools in Calabar Municipality. Using passive sampling method, a total of twenty (20) nutrient agar plates were exposed in five (5) selected primary schools in Calabar Municipality in the morning and afternoon respectively using IMA 1/1/1. Results shows that the heterotrophic counts ranged from 43 CFU/m? to 212 CFU/m’. The contamination rate and percentage distribution accessed on the air samples revealed that among the air isolates, Escherichia coli was the most frequently occurring isolate with a percentage occurrence of 6 (35.2%) while Pseudomonas sp. 3 (17.6%) had the least percentage of occurrence. Therefore, this work shows that the microbial air quality of the classrooms is heavily contaminated with bacteria.
