Abstract

Abstract This study examined the application of parametric statistical tests on students’ enrollment in Art and Science classes in secondary schools, using Government Girls Secondary School (GGSS) Talata Mafara as a case study. The research focused on analyzing the enrollment pattern of students from 2019 to 2023 in order to determine whether there were significant differences in students’ enrollment between Art and Science classes during the study period. Data for the study were collected from the school’s academic records and enrollment registers covering five academic sessions. The study employed descriptive statistics such as tables, percentages, and charts to summarize the data, while parametric statistical tools, particularly the t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), were used to test the hypotheses formulated for the research. The findings of the study revealed that there was a noticeable variation in students’ enrollment between Art and Science classes within the period under review. The analysis further showed that Science classes recorded a gradual increase in enrollment due to the growing interest of students in science-related subjects and career opportunities, while enrollment in Art classes fluctuated across the years. The parametric test results indicated that there was a statistically significant difference in enrollment patterns between the two categories of study. The study concluded that students’ enrollment in secondary schools is influenced by factors such as parental preference, societal perception, career prospects, availability of qualified teachers, and educational facilities. Based on the findings, the study recommended that school management and educational authorities should provide equal encouragement and adequate learning facilities for both Art and Science students to ensure balanced educational development. The study also suggested that guidance and counseling services should be strengthened to assist students in choosing courses that match their interests and abilities.
