PROPERTIES OF MOUND-SOIL CEMENT MORTAR CONTAINING EPOXY RESIN
Abstract
This study, investigate the mechanical and structural properties of Mound Soil (termite soil) as a partial replacement to cement to form a Cement-Mound Soil mortar composite at different mix ratios of binder to aggregate(fine). Different weights fractions of termite soil (0-25%) were mixed with Portland cement and epoxy-resin was added at: 0.0%, 2.0%, 4.0%, 6.0% and 8.0% of the weight of binder. Mortar specimens of 100mm by 100mm were prepared and cured for 3, 7, 14, and 28 days respectively and the following tests were carried out: compressive strength, split tensile strength, thermal conductivity, fire resistance, sorptivity and water absorption. The results from the tests shows an increase in the compressive strength and density of Mound-Soil Cement mortar at 10% replacement of cement with mound soil and cured for 3 days, with corresponding decrease in water absorption and sorptivity, following the addition of Epoxy-resin. Additionally, thermo-physical properties such as thermal conductivity and fire resistance were improved. The decrease in water absorption indicates a better water proofing material. While the decrease in thermal conductivity indicates better insulating properties of the mortar. In conclusion, mound soil cement mortar will produce a good compressive strength when cement is partially replaced with mound soil and cured for 3days. For a good result, only 10% Mound soil replacement level should be encouraged in commercial production of cement mortar.
