THE IMPACT OF THE FASHION INDUSTRY ON ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH SUSTAINABILITY IN LAGOS CENTRAL DISTRICT
Abstract
This research project investigated the environmental impact of the fashion industry in Lagos
Central, Nigeria, with a focus on awareness, attitudes, and practices among consumers and
professionals. A structured questionnaire was administered to 100 respondents, comprising 50
fashion consumers and 50 industry professionals. The findings revealed that while there is a high
level of awareness about the environmental impact of the fashion industry, challenges such as cost
and lack of training hinder sustainable practices. Notably, 92% of consumers recognized the
industry's environmental impact, and 88% were willing to pay more for eco-friendly items.
However, industry professionals cited significant barriers, including the high cost of sustainable
materials and limited access to training on sustainable production methods. The study highlights
the need for government support, public education, and industry collaboration to promote
sustainable fashion practices and mitigate environmental harm. The results of this study can inform
policy and industry initiatives aimed at reducing the environmental footprint of the fashion
industry in Nigeria, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable future for fashion.
