THE THERAPEUTIC POTENTIAL OF GARLIC AND ITS POSSIBLE USE IN COMBATING ANTIBIOTICS RESISTANT ORGANISM
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Although many antibiotics have been developed against bacterial diseases. The problem of antibiotic resistance and toxicity has made the continuous search for newer drugs an essential necessity. This study determined the phytochemical components and antibacterial activities of Allium sativum against Salmonella spp. and Klebsilla spp. The phytoochemical analysis was carried out using standard methods. The antibacterial activities of aqueous, ethanol and acetone extracts of both plants at different concentrations were determined against all the test organisms using agar well diffusion method. All the extracts were found to contain important phytochemicals such as saponins, flavonoids, alkaloids, phlabotannins, terpenoids, phenol, glycoside, quinine, cumarin and steroids. This study has established that the above Gram-negative bacteria are resistant to garlic (Allium sativum) extract.
