Abstract

This study investigates the level of awareness and usage of contraceptives among adolescents in institutions within Ewekoro Local Government Area. With the rising cases of unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among youth, understanding their knowledge and practice regarding contraceptive methods is critical. A multi-stage sampling technique was adopted. The research explores factors influencing awareness, the gap between knowledge and usage, and the socio-cultural dynamics affecting contraceptive decisions among young adults. Data was collected through structured questionnaires distributed among students in selected tertiary institutions, and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Data collected shows that majority of the respondents are aware of contraceptives and about two-thirds are aware that contraceptives prevent STIs. Condoms are the most commonly known method with 69% respondents followed by pills (46%), postinor (36%), withdrawal (33%), Injectables (29%), the least known are IUD with 7%, natural method (12%) and implants (12%).Findings revealed that while awareness of contraceptives is relatively high, usage remains inconsistent due to myths, stigma, partner influence, and limited access. Recommendations are made for targeted education and youth-friendly health services to bridge the gap.
