PHYTOCHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF AZADIRACHTA INDICA
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Azadirachta indica is a medicinal plant that is been used since pre-Columbian times in treating diseases. The aim of this study was to determine the phytochemicals present in the ethanol extracts of Azadirachta indica leaves, which could be accountable for the plant's acclaimed therapeutic properties, using standard technique. The phytochemical screening revealed the presence of Flavonoid, µg/g (264.7-267.6) Saponin, µg/g (515.8-516.8). Tepernoid 0. 42-0.32mg/100g, Phenol (0.23-0.28) mg/g, Alkaloids (0.80-0.83) µg/g, Cardiac Glycosides (2.82-3.23)%, Tannins 2.72%, Steroids (3.49-3.52) m g/100g, Hydrogen Cyanide6.(79-6.83.00 mg/kg), Oxalate 225.00 g/100 g. and Phytates 0.46-0.47%. The presence of these pharmacologically active substances, which have been researched to have antimicrobial, anti-diabetic, anti-oxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties amongst others, supports the efficacy of Azadirachta indica leaves in treatment of various pathologies and use in ethno pharmacology.
Keywords: phytochemical, antimicrobial, pharmacology, anti-oxidant, anti-inflamatory
