Abstract

Abstract This study examined employment generation through the Office Technology and Management (OTM) programme and its contribution to the economic advancement of Ekiti State. The research was conducted to assess how the skills and knowledge acquired through the OTM programme have helped in creating employment opportunities, reducing unemployment, and improving the economic well-being of graduates and residents of the state. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. Data were collected from students, graduates, lecturers, and employers through the use of questionnaires and interviews. Relevant information was also obtained from textbooks, journals, and other academic materials related to Office Technology and Management and economic development. The data collected were analyzed using simple percentages, frequency tables, and other statistical tools to present the findings clearly. The findings of the study revealed that the Office Technology and Management programme equips students with practical and managerial skills such as computer operations, office administration, communication skills, record management, entrepreneurship, and information technology competence, which enhance their employability and self-reliance. The study further showed that many graduates of the programme have secured employment in both public and private organizations, while others have established small-scale businesses, thereby contributing to job creation and economic growth in the state. However, the study identified some challenges affecting the effectiveness of the programme, including inadequate training facilities, insufficient funding, lack of modern office equipment, and limited opportunities for industrial training. Despite these challenges, the study concluded that the Office Technology and Management programme plays a significant role in employment generation and economic advancement in Ekiti State. Based on the findings, the study recommended that government and educational institutions should provide adequate funding, modern equipment, and improved practical training facilities for the programme. It also recommended stronger collaboration between institutions and industries to enhance students’ practical experience and employment opportunities after graduation.
