ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITIES OF ANNONA MURICATA LEAVES ON CLINICAL ISOLATES OBTAINED FROM WOUNDS IN CALABAR MUNICIPAL
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The present study was aimed to determine the antibacterial activity of different extracts of Annona muricata. Dried leaf powder was used for the extraction of different solvents such as hexane and distilled water. The solvent extracts were assessed for the antibacterial activity against bacteria isolates from wound infection. Organisms obtained from the culture of the wound infection includes Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella spp and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The result of the antimicrobial activity of Annona muricata leaf extracts shows variations of significant difference between the extracts of the plant and the way they affect the organism. Against staphylococcus aureus, the zone of inhibition showed 11mm in aqueous and 12mm in hexane extracts at 100mg/ml. Klebsiella spp was inhibited by aqueous and hexane extracts (10.00mm and 11.00mm respectively) while Pseudomonas aeruginosa was inhibited at the range of 9.00mm (Aqueous) to 10.00mm (Hexane). Ciprofloxacin was used as a positive control.
