AWARENESS AND USAGE OF CONTRACEPTIVES AMOMG ADOLESCENTS WITHIN ABEOKUTA SOUTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA
Abstract
This study explores the awareness and usage of contraceptives among adolescents in Abeokuta South Local Government Area, Ogun State, Nigeria, using a sample of 200 adolescents selected through stratified random sampling. Data collected via structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics revealed that although most participants were aware of common contraceptive methods—particularly condoms and oral pills—actual usage remained relatively low. Factors influencing this gap included cultural and religious norms, limited parental communication, peer pressure, and inadequate access to youth-friendly reproductive health services. The findings underscore the urgent need for targeted sexual and reproductive health education programs and improved access to adolescent-focused healthcare interventions, which could help reduce the incidence of unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections among young people in the area.
