EFFECT OF VITAMIN B12 ON SERUM ELECTROLYTES IN NICKEL CHLORIDE INDUCED TOXICITY IN WISTAR RAT
Abstract
Electrolyte homeostasis is essential for physiological stability, and disturbances often reflect underlying renal or systemic dysfunction. Nickel chloride (NiCl₂), a widely used industrial compound, is known to induce nephrotoxicity and oxidative stress, leading to alterations in serum electrolytes. Vitamin B12 (cobalamin), beyond its classical roles in hematopoiesis and neurological function, has demonstrated antioxidant and cytoprotective properties. This study investigated the effect of vitamin B12 supplementation on serum electrolytes in Wistar rats exposed to NiCl₂ toxicity. Thirty-six rats were randomly divided into six groups of six animals each: control, NiCl₂ only, thymol only, vitamin B12 only, NiCl₂ plus thymol, and NiCl₂ plus vitamin B12. NiCl₂ was administered orally at 100 mg/kg, and vitamin B12 at 100 mg/kg for 21 days. Serum sodium, potassium, chloride, and bicarbonate levels were analyzed using standard biochemical methods. Results showed that NiCl₂ administration significantly elevated all measured electrolytes compared to control (p
