THE ROLE OF NIGERIAN CIVIL DEFENCE CORPS IN REDUCING CRIME RATE IN MAIDUGURI METROPOLIS, BORNO STATE
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study examined the role of the Nigerian Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in reducing crime rate in Maiduguri metropolis, Borno State. The background of the study established that Maiduguri has faced enormous security challenges as a result of insurgency, vandalism, robbery, and other forms of criminality. The Nigerian Civil Defence Corps, as one of the paramilitary agencies in Nigeria, has been given the responsibility of safeguarding critical infrastructure, maintaining internal security, and collaborating with other security agencies to fight crime. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. Both primary and secondary data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and documentary sources. A sample size of residents and NSCDC personnel was used to generate responses. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis, with results presented in tables, percentages, and narrative discussions. The findings revealed that the NSCDC plays an active role in crime prevention in Maiduguri metropolis through patrols, intelligence gathering, mediation in civil disputes, and protection of critical infrastructure. The study also found that the Corps has been effective in reducing crimes such as theft, vandalism, and disturbances in public spaces. However, challenges such as inadequate funding, manpower shortages, lack of modern equipment, and overlap of functions with the police hinder its operations. The study concluded that NSCDC has made notable contributions to reducing crime in Maiduguri, but its effectiveness can be greatly enhanced through increased funding, recruitment of personnel, provision of modern security equipment, improved inter-agency collaboration, and stronger community engagement.
