Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of aqueous extract of garlic on some haematological indices in Albino Wistar rats. The study was done using fifteen (15) female Wistar rats of body weight (90-150g). The rats were divided into three (3) groups. Group I: Normal control group was treated with only feed and 0.2ml of distilled water, Group II: Garlic extract high dose group was treated with 600mg/kg and Group III: Garlic extract low dose group was treated with 300mg/kg. Blood samples were collected via cardiac puncture 12 hours after last feeding and administration (overnight fast). The animals were urethanized and whole blood obtained by cardiac puncture into non-heparinised tubes were allowed to clot for 2 hours until needed for haematological analyses. The parameters evaluated include RBC, PCV, HB, WBC, PLT, MCV, MCH and MCHC. The result showed that RBC, PCV, Hb, WBC, and PLT the high dose garlic group was decreased significantly (p0.05) compared to control and the low dose. However, there was no significant difference in MCV, MCH and MCHC among the groups. From the results, it can be concluded that garlic may reduce RBC count, PCV, Hb, but may not have effect on WBC count, platelet count, MCV, MCH, and MCHC particularly at high doses. Therefore, it should be taken with moderation.
