Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study examines the Total tannins of two selected medicinal plants (lemon grass and moringa) moringa is a famous vegetable tree with multifunctional properties, belonging to the family Moringaceae. Among the 13 species of Moringa, Moringa oleifera L. is mostly used. The aim of this study is to investigate the presence of total Tannins content of Moringa and Lemon Grass. Objectives of the study to develop and validate methods for the determination of total Tannins in Moringa and Lemon Grass extracts and to quantify the total Tannins content in leaves of Moringa and Lemon Grass. Fresh samples of Moringa and Lemon Grass leaves was purchased from Bayan Tasha Market, Damaturu Yobe state. These fresh leaves was wash properly to eliminate foreign particles. Then, they was separated from the petioles and room temperature dried for 24 hours (Vongsak et al., 2013). The samples were grinded to make it powder using a laboratory blender (Model: 3390D40, Thomas Scientific, USA) and the powder was stored in airtight container until further usage. Moringa: The reddish-brown color observed in the tannins test indicates the presence of tannins, which are known for their diverse biological activities, including antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antinociceptive effects. The blue-black color in the tannin test confirms the presence of tannins, which possess astringent, antidiarrheal, and antioxidant properties. Lemon grass: Similar to moringa, the reddish-brown color in the tannins test suggests the presence of tannins in lemon grass. The greenish color observed in the tannin test indicates the presence of tannins, which may contribute to lemon grass known health benefits (Pedrazza-Chaverri et al., 2016). Based on the result of the study, the following are recommended: These plants should be integrated into modern healthcare systems, especially for the prevention and treatment of conditions related to the compounds identified in this study.
