Abstract

The study reported the phytochemical composition and antimicrobial effects of Musa paradisiaca flower. Matured Musa paradisiaca flowers powder was extracted by cold extraction and analyzed qualitatively for phytochemicals using ethanol and water as solvents. The antimicrobial activities of the extracts were determined in-vitro against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumonia and Actinomyces spp by agar well diffusion method. Results of the phytochemical screening showed the presence of alkaloids, saponins, tannins, flavonoids, glycosides and reducing sugars. The extracts showed activity against the test organisms at 200, 100 and 50mg/mL. Zones of inhibition range from 7.0 to 20.0mm. Pseudomonas aeruginosa (20mm), Klebsiella spps (17mm), Actinomyces spp.(15mm) and Escherichia coli (10mm). Only Klebsiella spps showed MIC at 200mg/ml of the ethanol extract. No MBC was observed. The agueous extract was more potent than the ethanolic extract of Musa paradisiaca flower. This implies that extract of Musa paradisiaca flower exhibit antimicrobial activity at high concentrations. This finding, presents useful information about the use of Musa paradisiaca flower for medicinal purposes, specifically as a poultice in the treatment and management of wounds as claimed in the folklore medicine
