EFFECT OF ETHANOL EXTRACT OF KIGELIA AFRICANA LEAF ON HAEMATOLOGICAL INDICES IN LETROZOLE INDUCED POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME IN FEMALE WISTAR RATS
Abstract
Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a prevalent endocrine disorder
characterized by hormonal imbalance, metabolic dysfunction, and
haematological disturbances. Letrozole, an aromatase inhibitor, is commonly
used to induce PCOS in animal models, while Kigelia africana, a medicinal
plant traditionally employed in female reproductive health, has demonstrated
antioxidant and hematopoietic properties. In this study, thirty-five (35) female
Wistar rats weighing 150–200 g were randomly divided into five groups of
seven animals each. Group 1 served as the control and received 1%
carboxymethyl cellulose. Group 2 (standard) was administered letrozole (1
mg/kg, orally) for 21 days followed by metformin treatment. Group 3 (negative
control) received letrozole only. Groups 4 and 5 were given letrozole (1 mg/kg,
orally) for 21 days and subsequently treated with ethanol extract of K. africana
at doses of 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg, respectively. Haematological parameters
were analyzed using an automated haematology analyzer. Results showed that
the extract of K. africana significantly (p
