IMPACT OF FACEBOOK USAGE ON THE SOCIAL BEHAVIOR OF STUDENTS IN GOVERNMENT SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL NARAYI, KADUNA
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study examined the impact of Facebook usage on the social behavior of students in Government Senior Secondary School Narayi, Kaduna. Two research objectives and research questions guided this study. A descriptive survey design was adopted, with 126 students selected from a population of 420 SS3 students using simple random sampling. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire adapted from Onovo and Okechukwu (2024), with a reliability coefficient of 0.69. Data analysis was carried out using frequency counts and percentages. The findings revealed that Facebook usage among students was high, mainly for social interaction and entertainment such as making new friends (71.4%), keeping in touch with family (67.5%), and posting pictures and videos (61.9%). Academic use was minimal, with only 46.8% using it to discuss school topics. Regarding social behavior, Facebook had both positive and negative effects: 77.8% reported positive life impact, while 48.4% experienced depression. Based on the findings, it was recommended that parents, teachers, and school authorities provide proper guidance on responsible Facebook use, while encouraging students to maximize the platform for academic and developmental purposes.
