EXPLORING THE USAGE AND PERCEPTION OF CHATGPT FOR COMPREHENSION OF LECTURE NOTES AMONG STUDENTS WITH HEARING IMPAIRMENTS IN KADUNA POLYTECHNIC
Abstract
This study explores the usage and perception of ChatGPT for comprehension of lecture notes among students with hearing impairments in Kaduna Polytechnic. The study was guided by three specific objectives and research questions. The objectives of the study were to: examine how students with hearing impairments use ChatGPT for reading lecture notes; assess their perceptions of ChatGPT in improving comprehension of lecture notes; and identify the challenges they face in using ChatGPT for lecture notes. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population consisted of 23 hearing-impaired students officially enrolled in the Department of Special Education, Kaduna Polytechnic, during the 2023–2025 academic sessions. Due to the small and manageable population size, a purposive census sampling technique was employed, involving all 23 students. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire adapted from validated instruments developed by Meluwu and Neman (2025) for the Perceived Usefulness and Ease of Use scales and Ng, Chan, and Lo (2025) for the Challenges scale. The instruments demonstrated acceptable reliability coefficients with Cronbach’s Alpha values of 0.735 and 0.761, and a Cohen’s kappa coefficient of 0.78. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics including frequency counts, mean, and standard deviation. The findings revealed that hearing-impaired students actively use ChatGPT to read, summarize, and clarify lecture notes. Students perceived ChatGPT as an effective and engaging tool that enhances comprehension, motivation, and academic confidence. However, the study also found challenges such as poor internet connectivity and the limitation of ChatGPT in replacing direct teacher explanations. The study concludes that ChatGPT serves as a valuable assistive technology that supports inclusive learning for hearing-impaired students. It recommends that institutions provide reliable internet access, train students in the effective use of AI tools, and integrate ChatGPT into academic activities to enhance learning accessibility and performance.
