Abstract

This study examines the economic benefits and environmental challenges of infrastructural development in Bida, Niger State, Nigeria, with the goal of identifying strategies to achieve a sustainable balance between economic growth and environmental protection. Infrastructural development is recognized as a major driver of economic progress through job creation, business expansion, and improved access to essential services such as power, water, and transportation. However, these developments also generate significant environmental impacts, including deforestation, land degradation, air and noise pollution, and poor waste management. Using a descriptive survey design, data were collected from 81 respondents comprising residents, construction professionals, and government officials through structured questionnaires. Descriptive statistical tools such as mean item scores and frequency distributions were employed for data analysis. The findings reveal that infrastructure projects in Bida have enhanced local economic activities and employment, yet the environmental costs remain substantial due to weak policy enforcement, inadequate Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), and limited public awareness. The study recommends that government agencies enforce mandatory EIAs before project approval, promote eco-friendly construction practices, strengthen environmental policy enforcement, and enhance community participation in sustainability programs. Additionally, it advocates for green job creation in renewable energy and waste recycling sectors. Overall, the research concludes that sustainable infrastructure planning, guided by strong institutional frameworks and public engagement, is essential for maximizing economic benefits while minimizing ecological harm in Bida and similar urban centers.
