ARCHITECTURAL FRAMEWORK DESIGN OF A SPORTS COMPLEX IN URAN LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, AKWA IBOM STATE
Abstract
Sports facilities in many parts of Nigeria face challenges such as inadequate planning, poor circulation systems, limited multifunctional spaces, and the use of unsustainable construction materials. These deficiencies reduce functionality, discourage community participation, and limit opportunities for recreation and talent development. In Uran Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, the absence of a well-planned sports complex has restricted access to modern recreational infrastructure that can foster health, social interaction, and youth engagement. This research adopts a design-based approach that integrates contextual analysis, literature review, case study appraisal, and architectural programming. Site characteristics such as climate, topography, vegetation, and orientation were studied, alongside design parameters like internal planning, space zoning, circulation, and security. Data gathered informed the development of a conceptual framework and form evolution tailored to the needs of the community. The expected outcome is a sustainable, functional, and aesthetically appealing sports complex that addresses the identified problems. Key design strategies include efficient external and internal circulation networks, flexible space allocation for multiple sporting and recreational activities, integration of cost-effective and durable construction materials, and provision of emergency and sanitary measures to ensure safety and comfort. By combining planning philosophy with sustainable design concepts, the proposed facility will enhance recreational opportunities, encourage healthy lifestyles, and contribute to community development in Uran LGA, while setting a model for sports infrastructure in Akwa Ibom State.
