CAUSE OF STUDENTS LOW PERFORMANCE IN KEYBOARDING EXAMINATIONS (A CASE STUDY OF FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC, KAURA NAMODA)
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study investigates the causes of students' low performance in keyboarding examinations, with a focus on the Federal Polytechnic, KauraNamoda. Keyboarding is an essential skill for students in Office Technology and Management and other business-related disciplines. However, a recurring issue of underperformance in keyboarding exams has raised concerns about the effectiveness of teaching methods, availability of practice resources, and student motivation. The study employed a descriptive survey research design, using structured questionnaires to gather data from students and lecturers in the institution. The findings reveal that inadequate practical training, insufficient access to computers, outdated teaching methods, and lack of motivation significantly contribute to students' poor performance. Additionally, poor time management during exams and the misalignment between exam content and classroom teaching were identified as contributing factors.Based on these findings, the study recommends improved access to practice facilities, the adoption of modern teaching methods, increased emphasis on practical sessions, and better exam preparation strategies to enhance students’ performance. These recommendations aim to address the gaps identified in keyboarding education and improve students' competency and success rates in their examinations.
