Abstract

1.1 Background of the study In a modern technology-driven world, many argue that traditional art instruments have lost their relevance. However, painters still require sturdy storage spaces to house their creative equipment, which remains an essential tool in the painting studio. A storage cabinet is a specialized rectangular piece of furniture designed to store and organize art materials. Its use in painting studios dates back to the medieval and Renaissance periods, when artists relied on simple wooden chests and boxes to safeguard their supplies. The development of storage cabinets with multiple compartments revolutionized how artists worked, granting them the freedom to move without worrying about losing or misplacing their materials. One notable figure in the field of studio organization is Marie Fredrickson, who, in her 2022 article published by The Artist’s Magazine, highlighted the importance of storage solutions for artists. She emphasized that effective storage provides artists with the flexibility to secure their tools and equipment for extended periods, protecting fragile materials from damage. Fredrickson’s approach to studio management underscores the idea that proper storage is vital for preserving the integrity of delicate art supplies (Fredrickson, 2022, The Artist’s Magazine). In Artsy Dee’s view on ""How to organize your art supplies like a pro", having a dedicated space for art supplies helps artists maintain tidy studios and ensures tools are readily accessible (Artsydee, 2023). Artists’ storage cabinets come in various designs and styles to meet diverse needs and preferences. Some feature irregular compartments to accommodate materials of different sizes, while others include wheels for easy mobility. The versatility of these cabinets allows artists to experiment with different organizational layouts, fostering their growth and development as creative individuals. For instance, a 2023 article by Sarah Thompson in Creative Bloq discusses how adaptable storage solutions enhance studio functionality and inspire artistic innovation (Thompson, 2023, Creative Bloq). In a professional painting studio, standard storage cabinets are essential for creating an organized and conducive workspace. By investing in high-quality, durable storage options, artists can boost productivity and concentrate on their creative process without distractions. Renowned artist Ai Weiwei has spoken about the importance of an orderly workspace, noting in a 2023 interview with ArtNews that knowing the exact location of every tool and material was key to maintaining his workflow (Ai, 2023, ArtNews). For over a decade, the Visual Arts Department, particularly the painting unit at UNICROSS, has faced a critical shortage of storage cabinets. This gap has prompted efforts to enhance studio efficiency and order through appropriate storage solutions for art materials and equipment. Well-organized storage not only keeps student art projects accessible and beautifully arranged but also simplifies daily tasks, preserves material integrity, reduces clutter, and promotes a safer workplace. 1.2 Statement of the Problem Storage cabinets are ideal for storing materials by artists and to prevent delicate materials from damages, which is why it is vital to have one in the painting studio. The growing population in the painting studio, coupled with a shortage of functional Storage cabinet has prompted the researcher to design a functional storage cabinet that will protect artists’ works, and reduce the risk of accidents in the Visual Arts painting studio. 1.3 Aim/ Objectives of the Study: The primary aim of this research project is to produce standard artist’s storage cabinets for the painting studios in visual arts department, with the following Objectives; 1. to develop sketches of different storage cabinets design and select the most suitable. 2. to carefully examine different wood/material that best suits durability and functionality. 3. to produce a standard storage cabinet that will stand the test of time. 1.4 Research Questions: 1. How can the researcher create and refine multiple design concepts for a storage cabinet that are feasible for production? 2. How can the researcher examine the suitable materials needed to make a durable and highly functional storage cabinets 3. How can the researcher adopt effective methods to determine durability in storage cabinets production. 1.5 Significance of the Study: The production of artists storage cabinets is an important factor in the field of art and design as it directly impacts the comfort and safety of art materials when working in the studio. The significance of this study lies in its potential to extend the lifespan of artworks by carefully designing and manufacturing storage cabinets that create optimal conditions for the preservation, durability, and longevity of paintings. Additionally, the study aims to enhance efficiency in painting studios by improving the organization and management of art materials. Streamlined storage solutions will not only ensure accessibility but also foster a more productive and effective workspace for both instructors and students. The storage cabinets in this research is also relevant because it has different segments which gives it variety in storage patterns, capable of securing art materials of various sizes. This study has therefore helped in the documentation of how a painting storage cabinet could be constructed. The storage mechanism will be a great value to those aspiring to be painters in the future, and will help stir attention of both students and lecturers in the painting studio in the Visual Arts Department in UNICROSS. 1.6 Scope and Delimitation of the Study: This research is focused on producing a standard artists storage cabinet as well as examining their usability in a studio setting, specifically in the Visual Arts department, University of Cross River State, Nigeria. Due to various constraints such as finance, unavailability of needed materials, this project is narrowed down to using wood for the production of Three (3) storage painting cabinets in the department of Visual Arts, UNICROSS. 1.7 Definition of key terms: Cabinet; is a specialized piece of furniture designed to store and organize art supplies, such as paints, brushes, and canvases. It often features compartments, shelves, and drawers to keep materials neatly arranged and easily accessible. Feasible: It means something that is practical and possible to achieve or accomplish. Constraints: Constraints are limitations or restrictions that affect the ability to achieve a goal or complete a task. Sketch: A sketch is a rough or preliminary drawing that captures the basic elements of a subject without detailed refinement. Painting Studio: A painting studio is a dedicated space where artists create and work on their paintings. Flexibility: Flexibility refers to the ability to adapt or adjust to changing conditions or requirements. Fragile: Fragile means easily broken, damaged, or delicate. Storage; Storage refers to the act or process of keeping items in a designated place for future use.
