Abstract

This research project examined the problem of youth unemployment and rural crime in Emohua Local Government Area. The study aimed to provide an in-depth understanding of the relationship between youth unemployment and rural crime among youths in the area. A survey research design was adopted for the study. Four research questions and hypotheses were formulated to guide the research. The study employed a probability random sampling technique, with a sample size of 150 male and female respondents selected from the study area. Data were collected using questionnaires and interviews containing structured questions, which were validated by the research supervisor. The collected data were analyzed using frequency tables, percentages, and chi-square statistical tools. Findings from the study revealed that youth unemployment is strongly linked to rural crime, including armed robbery, drug abuse, cultism, kidnapping, and other criminal activities. The study further established that lack of employment opportunities contributes significantly to the increasing rate of crime among youths in rural communities. The study recommends that government should create employment opportunities, establish industries in rural areas, improve access to education and vocational training, and ensure equitable distribution of resources. These measures will help reduce unemployment, bridge the gap between the rich and poor, and minimize the high rate of rural crime in Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State.
