Abstract

ABSTRACT The reconditioning of the Industrial Lathe at the AKSU Engineering Workshop was carried out to restore its full operational efficiency. Over time, the lathe machine had deteriorated due to mechanical and electrical faults, leading to performance inefficiencies. This project aimed to recondition the industrial lathe at the engineering Workshop 1 of Akwa Ibom state University to its full working condition in order to ensure optimal performance. The objectives included identifying faulty components, replacing or repairing worn-out parts, and conducting test operations to verify performance. A systematic methodology was adopted, involving initial inspection, disassembly, fault diagnosis, repair, reassembly, and calibration. Key repairs included reconditioning the electric motor, replacing faulty contactors, servicing the headstock and lubrication system, and restoring precision alignment for machining operations. After successful reassembly, the lathe was tested through turning, facing, grooving, and drilling operations to assess its efficiency and accuracy. The results demonstrated significant improvements in machining performance, including smoother operations, increased accuracy, and enhanced power output. The reconditioned lathe is now fully functional, supporting practical learning experiences for engineering students. This project highlights the importance of regular maintenance and reconditioning in sustaining the efficiency and longevity of industrial machines
