Abstract

The therapeutic potential of O. gratissimum in diabetes management is underpinned by the presence of a diverse range of bioactive compounds, including flavonoids, tannins, phenolic acids, and alkaloids. These phytochemicals are known to exert a variety of pharmacological effects, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and hypoglycemic activities. The antioxidant properties are particularly relevant, as oxidative stress is a key contributor to the pathogenesis and progression of diabetes and its complications (Ogidi Et al., 2021). By scavenging free radicals, these compounds can mitigate cellular damage and improve insulin sensitivity. Furthermore, the anti-inflammatory effects of O. gratissimum extracts may help reduce the chronic low-grade inflammation associated with insulin resistance, thus improving glucose metabolism.
