Abstract

This study explores defatted Moringa oleifera seed cake as an eco-friendly additive to enhance rheology and control fluid loss in water-based drilling muds, addressing the environmental and economic drawbacks of synthetic polymers. The additive was prepared through cold-press oil extraction followed by warm-water washing to remove hydrophobic residues, then incorporated into API-grade bentonite mud at incrementally increasing concentrations. Rheological properties were evaluated using a rotational viscometer following API RP 13B-1 protocols, while filtration performance was assessed via standard low-pressure filter press testing. Results revealed consistent, concentration-dependent improvements in apparent viscosity, plastic viscosity, yield point, and gel strength, reflecting enhanced particle networking and thixotropic behaviour suitable for effective cuttings suspension and pumpability. However, fluid loss volumes increased with higher additive loading, exceeding industry benchmarks, despite formation of thin, uniform filter cakes, indicating limited standalone filtration control. Defatted Moringa seed cake demonstrates strong potential as a biodegradable rheology modifier derived from abundant agro-waste. To achieve balanced performance, hybrid formulations with conventional fluid loss agents are recommended, alongside high-temperature aging, shale inhibition testing, and field trials to develop compliant, high-performance water-based mud systems for sustainable drilling operations.
