Abstract

Polyscias scutellaria is a medicinal plant having antimalarial and anticancer effect and are used to treat other common diseases in West Africa. However, there is a shortage of information on the biological activities of Polyscias scutelleria. Hence, this study aimed to extract, evaluate phytochemical screening, anti-microbial,anti-inflammatory,anti-oxidant and GC-MS characterization and activities of Polyscias scutelleria. The Polyscias scutelleria was collected at a garden in water resources off airport road, Delta state Nigeria and authenticated at the same location and the Federal university of petroleum resources Effurun, Delta state, Nigeria.Air-dried pulverised samples of leaves were extracted separately with ethanol respectively. The extracts were subjected to phytochemical screening,anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and GC-MS characterization and activities using standard methods. The phytochemical screening of various extracts revealed the presence of saponins, tannins, phenols, and phlobatannis. The antimicrobial activity of the extracts showed significant activities when the culture test were brought after analysis. The minimum inhibition concentration of the extract was determined using the Broth diluton method the extract exhibited strong anti-microbial activity when tested aganst various Pathogenic organisms and microbes such as methicillin Resistant staphylococcus aureus MRSA, Vanomycin Resistant enterococci VRE, Candida albicans, candida Krusei, Helicobacter pylori Campyla bacterjejuni,Anti- oxidant test were carried out in the laboratory usong ABTS and DPPH proving that with funher development it’s a good antioxidant Anti-inflammatory activity assessment, inhibition of protein denaturation and membrane stabilization property was used to determine its anti-inflammatory potentials and giving best results. The GC-MS was carried out using the GC-MS equipment using a non-polar column after a small amount of concentated extract was dissolved the base peak which is the highest on the hologram was n-hexadecanoic acid helps in the designing of specific inhibitors of phospholipase as anti-inflammatory agents showing that it can be used as a potential source of pharmaceutics.
