Abstract

ABSTRACT Infertility has emerged as a medical and social problem affecting around 15% of couples of reproductive age and an estimated 45–70 million couples worldwide. Male factors such as decreased semen quality contribute to approximately 40% of infertility cases. This research investigates the role of the pro-inflammatory markertumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) in the seminal plasma of males with infertility. Eighty-eight (88) males attending fertility clinicswere recruited from Uniosun Teaching Hospital, Osogbo. Anthropometric measurements and sexual characteristics were obtained using structured questionnaires and standard methods. Semen samples were collected through masturbation or coitus into a sterile universal bottle. Sperm fluid analysis (SFA) was determined according to the World Health Organization (WHO) standard. An aliquot was centrifuged, separated and stored at -20oC. Seminal plasma TNF-α levels were analyzed using the Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. Data obtained were analyzed statistically withStatistical Package for the Social Sciences(SPSS) software version 22 (SPSS Inc. Chicago II. USA).The study showed a significant positive correlation between TNF-αand pus cells (p
