INSTALLATION OF A SOLAR POWER SYSTEM TO POWER 7 OFFICES AND THREE LABORATORIES
Abstract
The persistent challenge of unreliable power supply in Nigeria continues to hinder
productivity, research, and innovation across educational institutions. This project, titled
“Installation of a Solar Power System to Power Seven Offices and Three Laboratories,” was
conceived to provide a sustainable and reliable energy solution for the Department of
Computer Science, Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun. The study aims to
design, implement, and evaluate a solar photovoltaic (PV) system capable of meeting the
daily energy demands of staff offices and laboratory facilities while minimizing reliance on
the national grid and fossil-fuel generators. A mixed-method approach was adopted,
combining energy demand analysis, system design, and experimental evaluation. Energy
audits were first conducted to determine the load requirements of the offices and laboratories,
including computers, lighting, fans, and laboratory equipment. Based on these findings, an
7.2kW solar PV system was designed using fifteen 480W monocrystalline panels, a 10 kVA
hybrid inverter, and a 15 kWh lithium-ion battery bank. The system was configured to
provide uninterrupted power for at least six hours of full operation daily. Implementation
involved component installation, configuration, and testing under varying weather conditions
to
assess energy output, storage efficiency, and inverter performance. The system
demonstrated high reliability, reduced dependence on grid electricity, and improved working
conditions through the elimination of generator noise and emissions. Additionally, the project
offers significant educational value, serving as a demonstration model for students and
researchers interested in renewable energy applications. The results affirm that solar energy
provides a cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and scalable alternative to Nigeria’s
unstable grid system. Beyond addressing immediate energy needs, the project underscores the
potential of solar technology to drive sustainable development within academic environments.
It is recommended that similar installations be expanded across university facilities to foster
energy independence, promote environmental stewardship, and support the nation’s transition
toward a cleaner energy future.
