SCENE DESIGNING IN NIGERIAN THEATRE: A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF AFTER THE WAR AND WHAT IF?
Abstract
This study compared the demands, the principles, technical planning and the design element employed in creating the desired scene for the staging of After the War and What If? Productions, featured in the 2023 AKSU FEST on the Pinnacle Theatre stage as directed by Nnanake Ekeke and Bassey Nsa respectively. The study depended on qualitative research methodology in its approach and laid bare, analytically the use of scene design in the productions in Pinnacle Theatre. The study from a comparative perspective revealed that plays for productions are scene-designed based on the discretion of both the artistic and the technical directors to achieve the goals of the production. The study from summary of findings showed the scene designs of two productions can never be the same based on directional concept and approach. The study concluded that in scene designing, the ground and elevation plans are very essential in creating an acceptable scene in theatrical productions and therefore recommended that the scene-designer should be creative enough in harmonizing all the basic design elements in creating a scene for productions based on their peculiar realization demands.
