APPLICATION OF ELECTRICAL RESISTIVITY IN GROUNDWATER EXPLORATION WITHIN PARTS OF AKWA IBOM STATE UNIVERSITY PERMANENT SITE
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study focuses on exploring for groundwater using Electrical Resistivity Method (ERM)in parts of Akwa Ibom State University permanent site, Mkpat Enin Local Government Area. The aim of the study was to provide information on the subsurface lithology, depth to water table, and the potential for groundwater occurrence in the study area. Electrical resistivity survey was conducted using the vertical electrical sounding (VES) technique. A total of ten VES stations were conducted in the study area, along two profiles and the data obtained were processed using the ipi2win software. The interpreted data reveals three to four geoelectric sections with varying resistivity values and thicknesses. H and K curve types were obtained from the field data. From the interpretation of the data, the sediments in the third and fourth layers have the potential for groundwater occurrence. It is recommended to drill boreholes to the third layer to have a good interception of the aquiferous zone, the medium-coarse grained sand. The VES survey results demonstrate that the Akwa Ibom State University permanent site lies within a geologically advantageous zone for groundwater exploration. The subsurface stratigraphy aligns with the Benin Formation, characterized by extensive, high-yield aquifers.
