Abstract

This study examines audience perception of newspaper cartoons during the 2023 presidential election, focusing on their role in shaping public opinion, influencing voter engagement, and contributing to the electoral discourse. Utilizing a sample of 300 respondents, the research employs quantitative analysis to explore demographic trends, engagement levels, and the impact of cartoons on voter attitudes. Findings reveal a significant preference among younger audiences, with 90% reporting regular interaction with political cartoons. Notably, 70% of respondents perceived a positive influence on their opinions of candidates, highlighting the effectiveness of humor and satire in political communication. Thematic analysis indicates that while humor is a primary appeal, audiences also seek substantive critiques of policies. Furthermore, the study underscores the shift towards digital platforms, with 70% of respondents favoring online consumption of cartoons, necessitating adaptive strategies for cartoonists and media outlets. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the dynamic interplay between visual satire and political engagement, emphasizing the importance of political cartoons as vital tools for fostering informed civic participation in the democratic process. Recommendations for future research and practical strategies for enhancing the impact of political cartoons are also discussed.
