Abstract

This study investigates the effect of macroeconomic variables on business sustainability of selected textile manufacturing firms in Nigeria. The main objective was to evaluate how macroeconomic fluctuations influence firm-level sustainability. The specific objectives were to examine the effects of inflation rate, interest rate, and exchange rate on competitive advantage, market share, and profitability. The study used secondary data from the financial reports of two textile manufacturing firms Sprintex Textiles and Clothing and Sunflag Nigeria Limited covering the period from 2012 to 2023. The dependent variables were competitive advantage, market share, and profitability, while the independent variables were inflation rate, interest rate, and exchange rate. The study adopted an ex post facto research design and employed pooled panel regression models to analyze the data. Model selection was guided by redundant fixed effects testing. The results revealed that none of the macroeconomic variables had a statistically significant effect on the business sustainability indicators, although exchange rate showed a marginal negative impact on competitive advantage. The study concluded that firm-level sustainability in the Nigerian textile sector is more dependent on internal strategic factors than macroeconomic fluctuations. It recommends that firms enhance internal financial planning and operational efficiency to withstand macroeconomic volatility. Keywords: Macroeconomic variables, business sustainability, competitive advantage, market share, profitability, textile manufacturing, Nigeria, panel regression.
