BACTERIAL PROFILE AND ANTIBIOTIC SUSCEPTIBILITY OF ISOLATES OBTAINED FROM STOCK FISH HEAD SOLD AT BEACH MARKET CALABAR
Abstract
This study investigated the bacterial profile and antibiotic susceptibility of isolates obtained from stock fish head sold at Beach Market Calabar. A total of eight (8) different samples were collected from the market at different sampling tables. The samples were analyzed by 10-fold serial dilution technique and cultured by pour plate method. Bacterial isolates were presumptively identified by macroscopy, microscopy and biochemical testing. Antibiotic susceptibility isolates was evaluated by Kirby Bauer Disc diffusion method. Results obtained revealed that the highest bacterial count observed with too numerous to count (TNT), while the lowest was observed with 1.0x109 CFU/ml. the result also revealed the presence of Vibro spp. (25%), Bacillus spp (12.5%), Pseudomonas spp (12.5%), E. coli (25%), Salmonella spp (12.5%), Shewanella spp (12.5%). The sentivity results were calculated at susceptibility percentage that is Pseudomonas spp (35%), E. coli (40%), Bacillus spp (57%), Shewanella spp (50%), Vibro spp (14%), Salmonella spp. (35%), Vibro (3%), E. coli (21%). The result revealed that there is high level of risk associated with the consumption of some stockfish head due to their exposure to bacteria activities, the contamination of stockfish head raises concern about the safety of stockfish head sold at beach market Calabar.
