AN ASSESSMENT ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LECTURERS/INSTRUCTORS ATTITUDE ON STUDENT ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN OFFICE TECHNOLOGY AND MANAGEMENT ABDU GUSAU POLYTECHNIC TALATA MAFARA
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study examines the relationship between Lecturers/Instructors' attitudes and students' academic performance. Lecturers/Instructors play a vital role in shaping the learning environment, and their attitudes whether positive or negative can significantly impact students' engagement, motivation, and overall academic success. The objective of this research is to assess how the behavior, teaching methods, and general outlook of Lecturers/Instructors influence students’ performance in Abdu Gusau Polytechnic, OTM Department. A descriptive survey design was employed, and data was collected from a sample of 100 students and 3 Lecturers/Instructors from five Abdu Gusau Polytechnics. The data collection tools included structured questionnaires and interviews, focusing on key areas such as classroom management, teacher-student interaction, and instructional techniques. Data on student performance records was also analyzed to correlate the findings. The results of the study, analyzed using statistical methods such as Pearson correlation, revealed a significant relationship between Lecturers/Instructors’ attitudes and students’ academic outcomes. Positive teacher attitudes, including encouragement, supportive feedback, and enthusiasm in teaching, were associated with higher student performance. Conversely, negative attitudes, such as indifference or harsh treatment, were linked to poor student performance. The study concludes that Lecturers/Instructors’ attitudes are a critical factor in determining students’ academic success. It recommends professional development programs aimed at improving Lecturers/Instructors’ interpersonal skills and fostering positive attitudes in the classroom to enhance student achievement. The findings contribute to the broader understanding of the teacher-student dynamic and provide valuable insights for educational stakeholders in improving the quality of education.
