Abstract

In this study we assessed the bacterial evaluation of food contact surfaces of some restaurants in aba. A total of five different samples were collected from the restaurants in Aba. Pour plate methods was adopted. Microorganisms isolated included Staphylococcus species, Escherichia coli, Bacillus species, Lactobacillus spp, Klebsiella spp. The result obtained from students canteen revealed that total bacteria count observed ranges from 4.5 x10" to 8.7 x 10', the total coliform count ranges from 1.2x 105 to 1.9 x 10" and total aerobic count ranges from 3.7 x 103 to 8.7 x 10.. The result obtained from stafe canteen revealed that total bacteria count observed ranges from 3.0 x10 to 5.5 x 104, the total coliform count ranges from 1.0x 10 to 2.9 x 105 and total aerobic count ranges from 2.0 x 103 to 6.0 x 103. The result obtained from main park canteen revealed that total bacteria count observed ranges from 3.9 x10 to 7.5 x 104, the total coliform count ranges from 4.0x 105 to 8.2 x 105 and total aerobic count ranges from 2.7 x 103 to 9.0 x 103. The study showed that food contacts surfaces of some restaurants (tables, cloth, coolers, spoon and plates) were contaminated with various microorganisms indicating unhygienic status and poor handling practices which can pose danger to the health of the consumers. Based on the specification by the international commission for microbiological limits, however a closer and stringent supervision of foods restaurants should be carried out by the relevant authorities to prevent possible outbreak of food borne illness.
