PROBLEM SOLVING AND GUIDED DISCOVERY TEACHING STRATEGY AND STUDENT ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN MATHEMATICS IN ETINAN LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA
Abstract
The study was carried out to examine effectiveness of problem-solving and guided-discovery
teaching strategies on students’ academic performance in mathematics in Etinan LGA. In
order to achieve this purpose, three objectives, three research questions and three hypotheses
were formulated to guide the study. The design for the study was quastexperimental design.
The population of this study consisted of 2000 Junlor secondary two (J.S.S.2) Mathematics
students in sixteen (16) public secondary schools in Etinan Local Government Area of Akwa
Ihom State for 2022/2023 session. The sample size of one hundred and fifty (150) students’ was
used for the study. Simple random sampling technique was used for this selection. A
researcher-developed instrument tagged "Mathematics Performance Test (MPT)" was used for
data collection. The instrument was subjected to face and content validity. A reliability
coefficient of 0.88 was obtained for the instrument using KuderRichardson 20 formula. Mean
and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions while independent l-test
was used for testing the hypotheses. The findings of this study showed that there is significant
difference in the mean performance scores of students taught mathematics with problem
solving and guided-discovery teaching strategies; there is significant difference in the mean
score performance of students taught mathematics using guided discovery and traditional
teaching strategies; and there is significant difference in the mean performance score of
students taught mathematics with problem solving and traditional teaching strategies. Based
on the findings of the study, it was concluded that problem-solving and guided-discovery
teaching strategies enhanced students’ academic performance in mathematics in Etinan LGA.
It was recommended among others that, Project, workshops and conferences should be
organized by state government to train teachers on the use of problem-solving and guideddiscovery teaching strategies for teaching Mathematics concepts.
