Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examined the effect of organizational structure on workers’ performance at Niger State General Hospital, Bida Branch, using the Structural Contingency Theory as its theoretical foundation. The study employed a descriptive survey research design to obtain data directly from 48 staff members across administrative, accounts and finance, and health information management departments. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi-square tests at a 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that the hospital’s organizational structure, characterized by multiple hierarchical layers, moderate formalization, and centralized decision-making, significantly influences workers’ performance. Specifically, hierarchical layers affect communication and decision-making efficiency, while formalization enhances accountability and service quality but limits flexibility. Centralization ensures control yet restricts responsiveness and staff motivation. The study concludes that aligning structural dimensions with organizational realities enhances performance and recommends reducing excessive hierarchy, promoting moderate formalization, and decentralizing decision-making to improve efficiency, communication, and productivity. Keywords: Organizational Structure, Workers’ Performance, Hierarchy, Formalization, Centralization.
