Abstract

The focus of this study is to carry out an evaluation of Aristotle’s concept of hylomorphism. Aristotle in his metaphysics criticised Plato’s theory that matter and form lie in different realms of reality; hence, his bifurcation of reality into the world of form and that of appearance. However, Aristotle maintains a theory of inseparable link between matter and form contrary to Plato’s position. The essence of a thing cannot exist outside the thing for which they are essence, leading to his theory of hylomorphism. How plausible is Aristotle’s view for a better understanding of reality? Why did he maintain such a position? What is the implication of Aristotle’s theory for metaphysics? These questions and the likes are the reasons for this research. This research employs the philosophical methods of exposition, evaluation and criticism to assess Aristotle’s theory. Findings reveal that despite the criticisms against Aristotle's theory of hylomorphism, it continues to stimulate philosophical discourse and find resonance in contemporary debates. Its integrative approach offers a compelling alternative to reductionist and dualistic accounts of reality, fostering a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of material and formal causes. The study concludes that by critically engaging with Aristotle's hylomorphism, philosophers can enrich their understanding of ontology, and the enduring quest to comprehend the essence of existence.
