Abstract

Introduction: Second-hand smoke exposes non-smokers to many of the same dangerous substances and carcinogens as do regular smokers. It is a serious public health issue that can result in a variety of illnesses, including lung cancer, heart disease, and respiratory infections. Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the level of awareness and knowledge of the health effects of second-hand smoke inhalation among residents of Dada Estate, Osogbo, Osun State. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study, a total of 248 residents of Dada Estate, Osogbo, Osun State, were recruited using a convenience sampling technique. A selfadministered questionnaire on the awareness and knowledge of the health effects of secondhand smoke inhalation was used to obtain data from the respondents. Data was analysed using SPSS version 27.0 and inferential statistics, chi-square was used for significant relationship between the variables. The alpha level was set at 0.05. Results: Majority of the respondents had a good awareness and poor knowledge of the health effects of second hand smoke. There was a significant relationship between educational qualifications and level of knowledge of second-hand smoke inhalation. Conclusion: whilst it is good that the respondents demonstrated a good awareness of second hand smoke, the awareness did not translate into good health practice. I recommend that the government should ensure that the law prohibiting smoking in public spaces are enforced. Keywords— knowledge, awareness, second-hand smoke, inhalation
