Abstract

This study examined the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its ethical implications on content consumption among students of Federal Polytechnic Offa. The increasing adoption of AI-powered technologies such as recommendation algorithms, chatbots, virtual assistants, and content generation tools has significantly transformed the way students access, consume, and interact with digital information. While AI offers numerous benefits, including personalized learning experiences, easy access to information, and enhanced academic productivity, concerns regarding privacy, misinformation, academic integrity, algorithmic bias, and overdependence on technology have raised important ethical questions. The study aimed to investigate the extent of AI usage among students, identify the major AI tools utilized for content consumption, examine students' perceptions of the ethical implications of AI-driven content, and assess the influence of AI on students' information consumption behavior. A descriptive survey research design was adopted, and data were collected from students of Federal Polytechnic Offa through the use of structured questionnaires. The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The findings revealed that a significant proportion of students frequently utilize AI-powered platforms for academic and non-academic content consumption. The study further showed that AI enhances accessibility, convenience, and personalization of content. However, concerns were identified regarding the spread of inaccurate information, privacy breaches, reduced critical thinking, algorithmic manipulation, and issues of plagiarism and academic dishonesty. The findings also indicated that awareness of AI ethics among students remains relatively moderate, necessitating increased sensitization and digital literacy initiatives. The study concluded that although Artificial Intelligence has revolutionized content consumption among students by providing efficient and personalized access to information, its ethical implications require careful consideration and regulation. The study recommended that educational institutions should promote AI literacy, establish ethical guidelines for AI usage, and encourage responsible content consumption practices among students to maximize the benefits of AI while minimizing its associated risks.
